My wife, bless her tells me that I am rapidly becoming, or perhaps that should read have become a “Grumpy old fart”, so what better forum to spread my doom, gloom and paranoia than WordPress. I also have a love of old pictures, postcards and Edwardian Actresses, in particular Miss Gabrielle Ray which I hope to share at regular intervals. As my collection has grown I have set up another blog which contains only pictures of Miss Ray. Gabrielle Ray Thank you for viewing and comments are welcome.

This is definitely not new enough to have been taken during the Great Depression! Even the 1920’s would be too soon. Perhaps during the later Edwardian era, by the mid 1900’s at the latest, but no longer than that.
The c1930’s is a rough guess as most cards don’t often have a date or a name on them. During the Edwardian period maids still generally wore the longer dress uniform, by the 1920’s there was a general move to shorten the dress but if you look at some of the advertisements for the 1930’s this is consistent with this length https://summertime75.wordpress.com/2018/10/28/garroulds-the-tatler-wednesday-15th-july-1936/
Not sure why there is such a drastic difference between the two images, but these two also show 1930’s Maids uniforms, and both seem to see very much more modern images. One of them is also Garroulds Edgeware Road London,

And another is from a 1936 movie image, from a favorite 30’s “My Man Godfrey” with William Powell, and Carole Lombard. The maid, Molly, is played by another favorite actress, Jean Dixon.
