Apparently in the fifteenth century, wife-spanking was counted among the joys of marriage. Or so I deduce from this illustration by Maurice Leroy in a 1941 edition of the fifteenth-century book Les Quinze Joyes De Mariage (“The Fifteen Joys of Marriage”) by Antoine de La Sale
