My wife, bless her tells me that I am rapidly becoming, or perhaps that should read have become a “Grumpy old fart”, so what better forum to spread my doom, gloom and paranoia than WordPress. I also have a love of old pictures, postcards and Edwardian Actresses, in particular Miss Gabrielle Ray which I hope to share at regular intervals. As my collection has grown I have set up another blog which contains only pictures of Miss Ray. Gabrielle Ray Thank you for viewing and comments are welcome.

Tried to Google burnishers but no luck, what did they do? So many women in the photo..
Burnishing is a form of pottery treatment in which the surface of the pot is polished, using a hard smooth surface such as a wooden or bone spatula, smooth stones, plastic, or even glass bulbs, while it still is in a leathery ‘green’ state, i.e., before firing. The card is a reproduction and send by a friend who recently visited the Coalpost Potteries near Iron Bridge,in the village all the people wear Victorian dress and there are shop etc where visitors can experience, if only briefly the atmosphere, a great place to visits – we didn’t see any maids when we went though
I think that the number of women or young girls was probably because they were a source of cheap labour
