Women Voters – The Sphere – Saturday 21st December 1918

WOMEN VOTERS RECORDING THEIR VOTES FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE GENERAL ELECTION OF 1918

For the first time in this country, women, on December 14th, exercised the franchise in a Parliamentary election, and they did so with so much zeal that in some places they considerably outnumbered the male voters at the polls. Some were ignorant of the necessary procedure, but the majority had been so well coached by the press that they were well prepared. The artist shows the novel scene at a polling booth where women voters are depositing their ballot papers in the box.

London Fog – The Tatler – Wednesday 30th November 1910

London Fog.

It is true, although all wish it were otherwise, that the London fog is essentially a home product, or at any rate the prerogative of the residents in the metropolis. As a consequence Miss Pleydel Young’s drawing on this page cannot fail to appeal to any wishing to go to a fancy-dress dance in a decidedly novel dress. It can appropriately be carried out in silver, gold, or copper tissue veiled with three different shades of grey ninon, or should a “regular” pea-soup or London “particular” be desired pale brown ninon could be substituted. The bracelets and other ornaments are of smoked mother- o’-pearl and black pearl pendants, the picture being completed by grey silk stockings and suede shoes. It should be noted that the “cloud” of ninon thrown over the head is attached to the bracelets and as a consequence does not incommode the wearer. Should pounds, shillings, and pence have to be considered art muslin could be employed instead of ninon. The same idea carried out in lighter shades would represent country mist or indeed, anything with a shadowed effect.
