Goodbye Old Man

Fortunino Matania’s war-time painting, ‘Goodbye, Old Man’ depicts a soldier bidding farewell to his mortally wounded horse. It was commissioned by the Blue Cross Fund, a charity established for the benefit of horses wounded in war. During the course of the Firsy World War the Blue Cross attended to some 50,000 injured horses. It is estimated that the British Army used 1.2 million horses and mules during the war of which a staggering 484,000 were killed. Reproductions of Matania’s painting were sold throughout the war to raise funds for the cause. The original still hangs in the charity’s animal hospital in London.
