Cosette from Les Misérables


Born 181 years ago today, French artist Émile Bayard (2nd November 1837 – December 1891) is best known by many for his illustration of Cosette from Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

Émile Bayard (French, 1837–1891) Young Cosette sweeping: 1862 drawing for Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. French illustrator Émile Bayard drew this sketch of Cosette for the first edition. It has become emblematic of the entire story, being used in promotional art for various versions of the musical.
