“Gypsy Wedding”

I received this picture today, sold as a “Gypsy Wedding” but with no date. The photographer’s studio was Napier Studio with an address of 163 Longmarket, Pietermaritzburg (Maritzburg) dating from 1908 but I haven’t been able to discover how long they were in operation. On closer inspection I have my doubts as to whether the bride is in fact a female, but still an interesting picture and the wedding dress is probably from the early 1900’s.

  1. Pietermaritzburg (Maritzburg) sounds South African. The grooms’s vest looks central European, but most of migrants to SA were British, Dutch and French. His stripped shirt is intriguing…B xx

    • Sorry I should have added the South African part, my first thought was that he was a Pearly King but I don’t think they retained their costume and lifestyle outside London, as with most social history purchases there is little or no information about the sitters but it’s a nice addition to my wife’s collection of wedding pictures
