About
My wife, bless her tells me that I am rapidly becoming, or perhaps that should read have become a “Grumpy old fart”, so what better forum to spread my doom, gloom and paranoia than WordPress. I also have a love of old pictures, postcards and Edwardian Actresses, in particular Miss Gabrielle Ray which I hope to share at regular intervals. As my collection has grown I have set up another blog which contains only pictures of Miss Ray. Gabrielle Ray Thank you for viewing and comments are welcome.

The eternal question
Summertime, I love your blog, chiefly for the vintage postcards. I wonder if we could have more info about how you source these. Do you collect original cards, or find digital scans on the web? And how do you get the quality so good? You seem to avoid the usual scratches and dust spots that plague many scans. Do you touch them up yourself?
Thank you William for your comments, the majority of the postcards are from my own personal collection and very rarely do I use digital downloads, I scan each card and I do admit that I sometimes remove the blemishes, usually the postmarks where they have”tainted” the image, also dust spots when I have failed to clean the scanner screen properly. The news articles and most of the pages are from the News Archive although I have been fortunate enough to purchase a few for my collection. All the colour Theatre Programmes are also from my collection.
Sadly with the current situation I haven’t been to any postcard fairs for the past year but the various auction sites have been an excellent source with sellers from the UK and as far afield as Australia.
Thanks for that. For a beginner, which auction sites would you recommend for French postcards? The Agelous and Walery are my heroes.
I feel quite daft now I thought I was replying about my other blog, Gabrielle Ray slow day lol although the same is true, I use eBay, Delcampe, sometimes ebid and I have found Etsy to be a good source for cards, Ansichtskarten is quite good, they also sell on eBay and it’s worth checking both sites as their own can be cheaper
Thanks. Happy detiologising!
You too
How old are you?
Why?
Hi Grumps! I’m very interested in the life of Gladys Archbutt so thanks very much for putting her postcards on your blog. Over recent years I’ve been researching her career which, in addition to seeing her as a popular singer/actress/dancer in London and throughout the UK, also saw her touring in Canada and the USA where she married an American navy lieutenant. She was a very remarkable woman in many ways although dogged by personal tragedies. If you were interested I could send you her biography and I am always eager to add more! She’s actually a 3rd cousin of mine which sparked my initial interest. Thanks again for the postcards.
