Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: In the 1871 census James was shown as a photographic artist, living at Back Lane Biggleswade with his wife Sarah Emily Phillips b:1842 Morley Lancs and son Harvey b:1870 Biggleswade. In the 1881 census James was shown as a photographer living in Shortmead Street Biggleswade. He was living there with his wife Sarah Emily Phillips and children Mary Hannah b:1873 Biggleswade, Frederick b:1874 Biggleswade, Fanny b:1876 Biggleswade, Harold b:1877 Biggleswade and Frank b:1880 Biggleswade. In the 1891 census James was at Market Street Biggleswade where his occupation was shown as “stationer, photographer and picture frame maker”. He was listed as a photographer and picture framer in local directories. His wife, Sarah Emily Phillips, was also shown as a photographer. His son Fred Phillips was shown as an apprentice photographer. Also with the family were daughters Marianna (sic Mary Hannah), Fanny and Emily b:1881 Biggleswade and sons Harrold and Frank. In 1901 James was still in Market Street Biggleswade, a photographer and stationer. Acting as his housekeeper was daughter Mary Hannah. Son Fred Phillips, a photographer, was also living there and Edith Mary Bergers b:1877 Brighton was a boarder, shown as a photographer’s assistant. In 1911 Fred was shown as the head of the household in High Street Biggleswade, a photographer and picture frame maker. His wife Ettie b:1878 Biggleswade was a stationer, living with them were their son Fred b:1908 Biggleswade and Fred Snr’s neice, Elsie Alethea b:1881 Harlaston, Staffordshire.
In 1920 the firm was listed in local directories as Phillips and Sons, High Street, St Neots.
